Version 2.3.0Welcome to Chatly! This guide will walk you through installing, activating, and configuring your AI-powered WordPress chatbot.

1. Requirements
Before installing Chatly, make sure your website meets these requirements:
- WordPress 5.0 or higher
- PHP 7.4 or higher
- An API key from Anthropic (Claude) or OpenAI (ChatGPT)
Getting an AI API Key
Chatly requires an API key from one of these providers to power the AI responses:
Option A: Anthropic (Claude) - Recommended
1 Go to console.anthropic.com
2 Create an account or sign in
3 Navigate to API Keys
4 Click "Create Key"
5 Copy and save your API key securely
Option B: OpenAI (ChatGPT)
1 Go to platform.openai.com
2 Create an account or sign in
3 Navigate to API Keys
4 Click "Create new secret key"
5 Copy and save your API key securely
2. Installation
Step 1: Download the Plugin
After purchasing Chatly, you'll receive a download link for the plugin file (chatly.zip). Download this file to your computer.
Step 2: Upload to WordPress
1 Log in to your WordPress admin dashboard
2 Go to Plugins → Add New
3 Click the Upload Plugin button at the top
4 Click Choose File and select the chatly.zip file
5 Click Install Now
6 Once installed, click Activate Plugin
Step 3: Verify Installation
After activation, you'll see a new Chatly menu item in your WordPress admin sidebar. Click it to begin setup.
3. License Activation
1 Go to Chatly → License in your WordPress admin
2 Enter your license key (received via email after purchase)
3 Click Activate License
4 You should see a green "License Active" confirmation
4. Setting Up Your AI Provider
Step 1: Choose Your Provider
1 Go to Chatly → AI Provider in your WordPress admin
2 Select your provider: Anthropic (Claude) or OpenAI (ChatGPT)
Step 2: Enter Your API Key
1 Paste your API key in the API Key field
2 Click Test Connection to verify it works
3 You should see a green success message
Step 3: Write Your System Prompt
The system prompt tells the AI how to behave. Here's an example:
You are a helpful customer service assistant for [Your Company Name].
About our company:
- We sell [your products/services]
- Our business hours are Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm EST
- Our website is [yourwebsite.com]
Your job is to:
- Answer questions about our products and services
- Help visitors find what they're looking for
- Collect contact information from interested visitors
- Be friendly, helpful, and professional
If you don't know the answer to something, offer to connect them with our team.
Step 4: Save Settings
Click Save Settings at the bottom of the page.
5. Configuring Your Chatbot
Go to Chatly → General to configure basic settings:

| Chat Title | The name that appears at the top of your chat window |
| Welcome Message | The first message displayed when someone opens the chat |
| Initial Bot Message | The greeting message with optional menu options |
| Welcome Bubble Text | The teaser message next to the chat icon |
| Welcome Bubble Delay | Seconds to wait before showing the bubble (0 = immediate) |
| Input Placeholder | Placeholder text in the message input field |
6. Customizing Appearance
Go to Chatly → Appearance to customize the look:
Colors
- Primary Color - Main color for button, header, and user messages
- Secondary Color - Used for accents and hover states
Position & Size
- Chat Position - Left or right side of screen
- Button Size - Small (50px), Medium (60px), or Large (70px)
Bot Avatar
Upload a custom image (recommended: square, at least 100x100px) or leave blank for default.
7. Lead Capture Setup
Go to Chatly → Lead Capture to configure lead collection.
Enable Lead Capture
Toggle Enable Lead Capture to on.
Form Settings
| Setting | Description |
|---|---|
| Form Title | Heading shown above the form (e.g., "Let's stay in touch!") |
| Fields | Choose which fields to display (Name, Email, Phone, Message) |
| Trigger | When to show the form (after X messages or when interest detected) |
Email Transcripts
Enable Send Email Transcripts to receive a copy of each conversation when a lead is captured. The email includes the full chat history in a professional HTML format.
8. Email Marketing Integrations New
Chatly integrates with popular email marketing platforms to automatically add captured leads to your lists.
Go to Chatly → Integrations to configure:
MailPoet
Select your list from the dropdown. Leads are added automatically when captured.
Mailchimp
Enter your API key and Audience ID. Supports tags and merge fields.
Constant Contact
Connect via OAuth and select your list. Auto-syncs new leads.
AWeber
Enter your API credentials and list ID for automatic subscriber addition.
Webhook Integration
For custom integrations, use the Webhook option. Enter your endpoint URL and Chatly will POST lead data in JSON format:

9. Knowledge Base
Go to Chatly → Knowledge Base to add custom Q&As that help the AI give accurate, consistent answers.
Adding an Entry
1 Click Add New Entry
2 Enter the Question/Topic
3 Enter the Answer
4 Add Keywords (comma-separated)
5 Set Priority (Normal, High, or Highest)
6 Click Save Entry
10. SEO Insights & Yoast Integration New
Chatly's SEO Insights feature analyzes visitor questions to help you discover content opportunities.
Go to Chatly → SEO Insights to view:
Question Analytics
- Most Common Questions - See what visitors ask most frequently
- Question Trends - Track how questions change over time
- Unanswered Topics - Identify gaps in your content
Keyword Discovery
- Extracted Keywords - See the exact phrases visitors use
- Search Intent - Understand what visitors are looking for
- Content Suggestions - Get ideas for new pages or blog posts
Yoast SEO Integration
If you have Yoast SEO installed, Chatly can:
- Compare visitor questions against your focus keyphrases
- Suggest new keyphrases based on actual visitor queries
- Help generate FAQ schema from common questions
- Identify content gaps on existing pages
11. Viewing Conversations
Go to Chatly → Conversations to view chat history.
The conversation list shows:
- Date and time started
- Number of messages
- Whether a lead was captured
- Page URL where chat occurred
- Visitor location (if available)
Click View to see the full message history. You can also:
- Export conversations as CSV
- Delete individual conversations
- Filter by date range or lead status
12. Analytics
Go to Chatly → Analytics to see performance metrics:

13. Diagnostics & Support New in 2.3
Go to Chatly → Support to access the built-in diagnostics tool.
System Status
View at-a-glance status of your Chatly configuration:
- License status and expiration
- API connection health
- Plugin version
- WordPress/PHP compatibility
Generate Diagnostic Report
Click Generate Diagnostic Report to create a detailed report including:
- WordPress and server environment
- Chatly configuration (API keys are never included)
- Potential plugin conflicts
- Recent error logs
- Hosting provider detection
You can copy the report to clipboard or download as a text file to share with support.
Common Issues
The Support page includes expandable solutions for common issues like caching conflicts, theme compatibility, and API connection problems.
14. Troubleshooting
Chatbot Not Appearing
- Check that your license is active (Chatly → License)
- Clear your browser cache and any WordPress caching plugins
- Check for JavaScript errors in browser console (F12)
- Verify the chatbot is enabled in Chatly → General
- Some themes (like The7, Avada, Divi) may require CSS adjustments
AI Not Responding
- Verify your API key with "Test Connection"
- Ensure your Anthropic/OpenAI account has credits
- Review your system prompt for issues
- Check the error logs in Chatly → Support
Lead Capture Not Working
- Verify your email integration settings
- Test by submitting a lead yourself
- Check that required fields are configured
- Review webhook logs if using custom integration
Caching Plugin Conflicts
If using WP Rocket, W3 Total Cache, LiteSpeed Cache, or similar:
- Exclude Chatly scripts from minification
- Clear cache after making Chatly changes
- Disable "Delay JavaScript Execution" for Chatly files

Chatly's license fee covers the plugin. You pay separately for AI usage directly to Anthropic or OpenAI. Most sites spend $3-10/month on API costs, depending on traffic and conversation length.
Yes! Depending on your license tier, you can activate Chatly on 1, 3, 5, 10, or unlimited sites.
The chatbot will stop appearing on your website. Your settings and data are preserved. Renew your license to reactivate.
Absolutely! Use the System Prompt to define personality and behavior, and the Knowledge Base to add specific Q&As for accurate, consistent responses.
Yes. All conversation data is stored in your own WordPress database. We don't have access to your visitor conversations. Your data stays on your site.
No. Chatly loads asynchronously and doesn't affect your page load speed or Core Web Vitals.
Both work great! Claude (Anthropic) is known for nuanced, helpful responses. ChatGPT (OpenAI) is the most widely used. Try both and see which fits your needs.
Yes, you can switch between Claude and ChatGPT at any time. Just update your API key in the settings.
